Talking Points for Negative Publicity

You may come across sitb a friend or someone who is genuinely confused by what they are hearing ... we are providing these "talking points."  Denise or Kevin would be happy to clarify or amplify any of the points below.


Our hope is that you won't have to deal with any of this, but if you do, we wanted you to be prepared.

  1. The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids’ revenue numbers include probono media value (a required auditing practice).  Our actual operating budget is roughly 6 Million annually, funded (as most health-related nonprofits are) by a combination of government grants, corporate and foundation support and individual gifts (individuals solicited primarily through an annual fundraising dinner)
  2. In support of our Medicine Abuse Project, the Partnership’s national effort to drive down initiation of prescription drug abuse, we accept unrestricted support from pharmaceutical companies.  We believe these companies have a responsibility to support programs aimed at preventing misuse and abuse of their products; they do NOT direct development of our content.   Companies who have played a part in the nation’s current opioid crisis also need to be an integral part of the solution. We would argue that the pharmaceutical industry has a civic and humanitarian obligation to help prevent diversion and misuse of their products. Whether through a court settlement or through corporate philanthropy, they have an urgent responsibility help bring forth effective and actionable resources to help the millions of families who are dealing with an opioid use disorder at home.  For those reasons, the Partnership has requested financial support from some pharmaceutical companies who support our mission, in addition to multiple other funding streams. This is similar to universities, arts and theater institutions, and other nonprofits that receive funding from various sources. Our work in this area is not dictated or influenced by any financial contributor, nor have we ever answered to any funder or special interest in this capacity. Despite our independence from influence in these matters, we have made a decision to decline funding from those opioid manufacturers who are defendants in the consolidated lawsuits currently pending in Ohio. This state lawsuit includes one of the most comprehensive list of companies. The multi-district litigation currently affecting some opioid manufacturers, which combines lawsuits from around the country filed in federal court, can require accountability on a larger scale than we could ever hope to do. Therefore, the Partnership feels it is wise to let the court cases play out without any perception of bias because of a company’s financial support of our work. It is for that reason that we have currently narrowed our policy with respect to this group of consolidated cases. We acknowledge that there are a number of other lawsuits pending around the country and more information may be revealed. We acknowledge it is not within our realm of expertise to determine the merits of these various matters. The Partnership is open to re-assessing and evaluating our position at a later juncture and we remain open to expanding our restriction over time.
  3.  Also as part of the Medicine Abuse Project, we are in the fourth year of a five-year FDA supported prescriber education campaign.  Most of the FDA’s support (a little over $400k per year) goes to the communications agency with whom we work on website development and messaging. 
  4. We are a communications-based organization putting families in touch with resources, not a treatment supplier.  Our website will receive well over 6 million unique visitors this year, and our helpline staff will serve 3,500 families – with the primary aim of helping them prevent or address their children’s drug or alcohol addiction.
  5. Our state/local alliance structure is a loose confederation of autonomous entities, who generally place Partnership public service announcements (ads developed and placed via 100 percent pro-bono partnerships with agencies and media) in local media but otherwise have their own leadership, agendas and communications. 
  6. Our parent coaches are professionally trained, unpaid volunteers who help families through our free peer-coaching program.
